Abstract

Increased competition and new customer requirements have forced manufacturers to strive towards selling industrial product/service systems. Product/service systems have derived partly from environmental research and development. However; it is still not clear how much can be earned in environmental and economic concerns.

This paper aims to explore the economic and environmental benefits of product/service systems from a lifecycle perspective in comparison to traditional selling approaches. To fulfill this aim; four case studies were performed at four product/service system providers in Sweden. The data was collected through semistructured interviews; telephone interviews and data provided by the product/service system providers. A comparison Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) was conducted between traditional scenarios and product/service system scenarios. In addition; a Life Cycle Cost (LCC) analysis was conducted. To summarize; in all four cases the product/service system scenarios had environmental and economic advantages in comparison to their traditional selling scenarios.
