Call for Papers – Special Issue

The graying of a youthful generation

IJAL calls for papers on Baby Boomers, (including related categorizations from non English speaking countries).

Many countries experienced a baby boom in the 1940’s and in particular after the end of World War II. This “generation” of Baby Boomers has been described as powerful and dominating, as well as youthful and politically radical. It is also clear that hopes as well as fears have been linked to the way Baby Boomers will affect ageing policies as well as ageing itself in the coming years.

Since so much interest in media and politics is presently being devoted to expectations surrounding this generation, we believe that a special issue on this particular topic is warranted. We would also like to welcome submissions that highlight categorizations less known than Baby Boomers. In Sweden, for instance, a category labeled the “40’s generation” is stereotypically linked to the radical student movement of 1968 and sometimes even named the “68 generation”. In addition to a discussion of expected increases in costs for pensions and elder care, there are also debates on whether members of this generation has constituted a vested group, and will continue as such during the coming years, if they will accept to give up power, whether they will give rise to a change in the commercial interest in seniors and create new images of aging etc.

Please submit articles (following regular procedures of IJAL) not later than June 30, to ijal@isv.liu.se.
