Abstract:The second language (Swedish) vocabulary of the Finnish-speaking language immersion students in Finland is well developed as early as in grade 4. Earlier studies have shown excellent results in the vocabulary development; especially in contexts belonging to the school environment. In addition; early total Swedish immersion in Finland as a communicative model seems to have a positive influence on the second language (Swedish) of both the boys and the girls. The Swedish vocabulary development of the Finnish-speaking teenagers in early total Swedish immersion and the gender differences will be studied in more depth in my research. This article gives some preliminary results included in that research.

The focus of this article is on the immersion students use of verbs in their written second language. The choice of verbs and how they are used in the texts are discussed with the help of semantic field analysis. Two semantic fields (verbs for movement and verbs for communication) have been analysed and the results of the immersion students have been compared with a Swedish-speaking control group. The results are similar in the two groups; i.e. the differences in the use of verbs between the boys and the girls are similar in the immersion group and in the control group. The analysis also shows features in the immersion students use of verbs that are typical of second language learners in general. In addition some features typical in particular of Finnish-speaking learners of Swedish as a second language were noticed. However; these features are not dominant in the texts of the immersion students.
