Peace is the life goal in society, but the path to peace often leads through painful crises. One of those painful crises is the wind of war which imperils the gift and task of peace the most. Understanding that Christ’s peaceful farewell message can be lived out and proclaimed only by peaceful disciples, Catholic Church – as a herald of peace, and in face of terror brought about by the agressor’s attack against Croatia – responded with constant efforts emphasizing protection of human lives and persistant commitment to peace. Through words and examples of its shepherds and concrete actions of its institutions, croatian Catholic Church relentlesly pursued its public call for peace, prayer, tolerance and co-existence of all people in Croatia. Being aware that its task and duty is to condemn every violation of freedom and democratic life, it advocated for stopping warfare and commiting to fair negotiations. In the light of daily war operations, the Church was aware that continuing conflict will lead to an irremediable catastrophy. Therefore, it taught that true peace is possible only through forgiveness and reconciliation however difficult it may seem when faced with heavy burden of pain left behind war, but which can be eased by faithful and courageous reflection of all parties included. Through that long and difficult process mutual forgiveness mustn’t eliminate the need for justice or block the path towards truth, because they present concrete prerequisites for reconciliation. That is why the Church has exemplified the necessity of systematic care for building up persons able to discern forces for reason and peace.
